The Pearl of Dorset
This 45 minute video looks at the
unique coastal town of Lyme Regis in West Dorset, South West England as well as the
surrounding countryside and fossil rich coastline.
Flanked on either side by dramatic coastal scenery, the former Saxon settlement of
Lyme Regis is famous throughout the world. The town's narrow and steep winding
streets epitomise old England. Many famous people and historic events are connected
with this quaint former sea port.
The Royal Borough of Lyme Regis and the unique nearby Undercliff nature reserve
were the setting for an Oscar winning film. The Undercliff was created by a natural
disaster over 100 years ago. It is now Britain's largest self sown ash forest and is host
to a range of plants and animals, from orchids to peregrine falcons.
The surrounding cliffs and beaches contain Europe's largest concentration
of fossils, many over 100 million years old.
The video also traces the surrounding area's rich history and legends. It features the wildlife and idyllic rolling countryside of West Dorset. The video reveals the ancient secrets of the nearby village of Uplyme in the county of Devon.
